Drive Logistics Recognized for Rapid Growth

Drive Logistics was honored by a regional publication as one of the fastest growing companies in the northeast Florida region. 

The Jacksonville Business Journal's top 50 fastest-growing private companies are determined by analyzing verified financial figures for 2018, 2019 and 2020.  Drive Logistics has been represented on the list for two years running (2020,2021) and peaked at No.7 in 2021.

To be selected companies must have overall revenue growth from 2018 to 2020 and earned annual revenue of at least $500,000 in 2018, among other criteria.

Founder of  Drive Logistics Michael O'Leary spoke with the Business Journal about the company's vision and plans for the future. 

What strategic choices have you made that led to your fast pace of growth?

There came a moment as we were building the company when we realized that the business approach we were using was not going to get us the success that we wanted. We took a moment and tried to look at it with a fresh perspective and realized if we were going to simply recreate the same approach to trucking that every other company has, we were never going to have anything special. It was that moment when we decided to disrupt our own model, that it led us to recognize that there was a need to disrupt our own model, and the entire industry, for the benefit of our clients.

What lessons have you learned about leadership through running a fast-growing company?

You have to be willing to pivot, quickly recognize a mistake and be willing to go back to your team and say "Hey, I got it wrong, but we are going to try this instead and maybe I'm right this time." You must be willing to have your team come and tell you what they think. One of the most important things you can do when running a fast-growing company is being adaptable.

How will you continue growing over the coming five years?

We have a vision for where we are going. Even though we are realizing some tremendous growth right now, we recognize that we are just beginning to disrupt a market. We're evolving on a daily basis. We believe that we are going to hit our goals over the next five years, but we are going to do it by continuing to evolve which means we're not going to do it with the formula as it exists today. The day we stop seeking change is the day we no longer offer the opportunity to disrupt our market to make things better.

How do you keep your company culture strong while growing quickly?

That's one of the most difficult things to do. A year ago, we had four to five people in the entire organization. A year later we have over 30 people. You don't necessarily maintain a culture, you're going to incorporate the approach, experiences and everything about new employees into your organization. You're finding the best things in everybody and focusing on that. We welcome what everyone brings to the table and what makes them special and we integrate that into who we are. It's more about allowing the culture to evolve in a positive way. The vast majority of our employees have been with the company for under a year, but I love the culture that we have and I love who we are.
